Breakfast was poor at the Comfort Inn (that was for Jim), but the fact that we were at the 100th meridian...in the dead center of the USA, Sam just needed to photo her ADFAC's Cotton Rag.

We have one extra day to explore the middle of the country due to some back end scheduling changes. As such we scoured the map and due south...completely opposite the direction we wanted to head...Peggy noticed that
Greensburg Kansas was only 5 hours away.
Greensburg was the location our church
Missions Team headed out to help 2 years ago under the awesome leadership of Stu and Renee
Nemy. Peggy so wanted to get photos of the town now, and send them back to all who served there, hopefully providing some motivation and interest for past and future missions teams. We did take a number of photos, and so if you go to Day 3 Part 2:
Greensburg, yo will see those photos. For those who are not as interested in that part of our trip, we will continue below with the food and beverage portion... Trip Advisor recommended this Diner, Rating it #2 out of 167 Restaurants in Hays Kansas.

Even the Me's restroom had some cool sinks...

Being a
brew pub, we were forced to enjoy the amber and stout offerings :))) Notice who made a bit
more progress...

Okay, so the
reuben was superb... sorry Jim!

Sam's BLT with garlic fries was also very tasty...

A traditional soup of the region is green beans, dumplings and potato all mixed together. A real taste treat as well...I think
peggy might add this to her repertoire for Soup Night.

After 10 hours of driving, we were able to find a Guy
Fieri recommended BBQ house just southeast of Kansas City...Guy had been here and sampled everything we were told.

Unfortunately we couldn't sample everything for 2 reasons: 1) we have already gained more weight than most 6 month pregnant women and 2) we had to get to our dump (I mean motel) in time to watch So You Think You Can Dance. That said, no one could keep me from ordering what Guy loved: the burnt brisket ends in Sweet Spicy BBQ sauce. Are you kidding, I said to the waitress. Did they put this on the menu just for me? Everything I love in BBQ, well the only thing I love...burnt stuff, and I am a happy camper....this dish of 1/2 pound yum was amazing.

The dry rub on these baby backs had Sam and Peggy both without words...almost...well not really...well not at all...in fact, they couldn't stop talking about them.

and smiling...

3 Choices of Liquid Love...

We didn't have time to stop for a sunset photo (remember the Dance show)...nonetheless, the sunset was spectacular at 70 mph (speed limit 70)

We arrived at the
EconoLodge near Kansas City in a town called
Olathe. While we were making reservations sitting at the BBQ place I had a choice between a Comfort Inn for $95 or this
EconoLodge at $45. Ready to confirm the Comfort Inn and avoid any dump despair, Peggy spoke up and said famously "How bad could it be? Let's save the money and go to the
EconoLodge." We just arrived and if 1 is no
dumpness and 10 is a perfectly horrible dump from all respects (like the one in Eugene, Oregon with Jim Jordan for the Eric Beck wedding), and if the first place we stayed was a 6, and last night was nice...a 2 on the meter, this place is an easy 7.5....oops I wrote too soon, Peggy just said 8 for sure, Sam was more mellow with a 7. She adjusted to 6.75 since no bugs or spiders in sight...yet...
That said, check out
Greensburg photos on Day 3: Part 2...
Love you guys! Gary
That did look like some amazing BBQ. BTW I am home to stay! Yay!
ReplyDeleteHave you had free high speed internet all the way?
ReplyDelete"Sam just needed to photo her ADFAC's Cotton Rag."
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does this mean? ARE you speaking Gubitz again?
ADFAC is the Mount Hermon team she worked for (something related to Adventure Facilities), and they have been doing a "travelling pants" type routine over the years with the Cotton Rag...go figure...
ReplyDeleteI still don't get it. Not hip on what a "travelling pants type routine" Does that mean they take a picture of the bag wherever they traveL?
